What is ESDM?

The Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) is a play-based, evidence-based intervention specifically designed for young children with autism aged 1 to 6 years. Combining play-based teaching, naturalistic therapy, and the science-backed principles of applied behaviour analysis (ABA), ESDM takes a developmental approach, focusing on enhancing overall growth rather than just addressing behaviours. Its primary goal is to improve communication, social engagement, and cognitive skills through enjoyable, interactive sessions between the therapist and child.

Developed by Dr Sally Rogers and Dr Geraldine Dawson, ESDM is a highly flexible approach that can be delivered in various settings, including clinics, homes, childcare centres, and schools. It not only helps children reach their developmental potential but also fosters stronger parent-child relationships, empowering families to actively participate in their child’s progress.

Evidence-based treatment for autism

According to the Department of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina, children with milder cases of autism who receive Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) therapy can become "indistinguishable" from children who are not on the spectrum. This transformation is attributed to significant changes in brain functioning. Similarly, research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry found that ESDM therapy can normalise brain activity in children with mild autism symptoms.

Following five years of randomised clinical trials, the University of Washington reported that children who received ESDM therapy experienced an average IQ increase of 17.6 points, compared to a 4-point increase for children participating in other community-based therapy programs. The study also highlighted that children who underwent at least two years of ESDM therapy, with sessions lasting 20 hours per week, demonstrated greater improvements in language, cognitive abilities, and adaptive behaviour. Additionally, these children exhibited fewer autism symptoms compared to those who received other forms of intervention.

In Australia, ESDM is widely recognised, taught, and researched at leading universities that specialise in the diagnosis, therapy, and treatment of autism.
